Memories - like watercolors - are fluid, liable to drip down the page if left in the rain. In the mind any emotion can be rain. He’d known the story when they confirmed his diagnosis. Lose the leg or die. No gray areas. He’d known what he’d done, that he was going to die in excruciating pain. After the bypass he’d been weak, too weak to stop his pain and too stubborn to die. He’d asked for the coma and he’d known what would happen, what Stacy would do, because love was the easiest pathology to predict.

He’d been grateful.


a/n: I just rewatched the episode and it struck me that House obviously didn't want to die, he just didn't have enough self-worth to save himself. He's a smart guy, he had to have known - or at least suspected - what Stacy would do, but he put himself out of the game anyway. Well, it was just a thought.
